Thefts of Catalytic Converters Sweden

To add on the issue with thefts of all these Catalytic Converters.

Before 2020 thefts of Catalytic Converters in Sweden were more or less unknown.

However, from the beginning of 2020 we started to see an increase and it has continued.

Sweden is a small country in the northern part of Europe but suffer a lot from vehicle related thefts, like luxury cars, heavy machinery, also boats, outboard engines etc. mostly operated by International Criminal Networks.

Thefts of Catalytic converters ended up to a total over 3000 for 2020 (to compare 74 thefts in 2019). The start of 2021 is no better, we have already for January and February over 1000 thefts.

Police in Sweden found in February a storage with over 1000 Catalytic Converter units. Until now it´s unclear whether they have been stolen or not. We also suspect that bad (exhaust) converters might be resold because of the lack of converters to replace after thefts.

In Sweden we see that most cars affected of thefts are older Toyota cars, mostly model Prius. ( more than 50% of all thefts 2020 are from Toyota cars) A program to mark the converters using different methods are ongoing, one is use of a safe label.
